Case in point: Headsets and Highballs

Seems like a great name, but then you have to keep it. And sometimes, it’s just not gonna seem that great, because it’s boring, and you’ve had it a long time, and you can’t change it–like a spouse, kind of.

But titles are very meaningful. Maybe that’s why they’re so hard to commit to. Maybe (probably) I’m just talking about myself, but it’s hard to commit to a title for a blog, for example. Is anything really clever after the 10th time you think of it, or see it, or hear it? Maybe, but sometimes it’s just not and you’re over it–like classic rock, kind of.

I know what’s interesting. Like a laser. I’m not great at perceiving lies or bullshit. Not great. I don’t have any kind of keen instinct for cutting a bitch down or even noticing when a bitch crosses me. Not right away. I usually figure it out much later, if at all. Mostly if someone tells me. So I never get to say the really brilliant thing I come up with a few days later. So, that bothers me. I wish I had that skill so that I could just be a businesswoman and have my life figured out al-fucking-ready.

But I don’t. That’s not my skill. My skill, passion, and maybe talent is in registering interest. I understand. I am not easily and never falsely stimulated. I can fake it, pretty well, but I’m never confused about it. I always know–instinctively, easily, obviously–what’s compelling.

So that’s a long, kinda boring way of saying, “I have opinions.” Which is what always stops me, I think. Who needs another asshole, right? No one. Not earth. Not a single earthling. But anyway, I have to get over that shit because it’s my life and I’m the only one who has it. Lots of people have a useless talent. We all have to do the best we can.

So anyway, here it really is: Curation. I think I’ll find great joy, satisfaction, personal fulfillment and/or success in being honest and earnest about what’s good and just letting go of what’s not. I spend so much f’ing time just being palatable and inoffensive just to get through the f’ing day. I deal with too many people in my current job. It’s a service job and I’m good at it and I could be really good at it, but fuck that job. I’d rather make a case for what’s good and worth my time than practicing a million more ways to pretend that I give a shit about anything mediocre.

Hope that’s clear.

This is my first time seeing him, today, watching this. Good gravy.

Oprah is the Queen of all media, as much as one can be. OWNing a network encompasses that.  All that. Every media opportunity exists within a network’s facilities/abilities/illities.

TOUGH title. Solid flick. Mama’s got to figure out her life. She’s 30 like me and facing the same issues. Does she want to  marry? Can she even if she does want? Can she start her own business? Is that what she wants? All the while she struggles to stay afloat. Like me, she also lost her first love. Mine left, hers died.

What really gets me about this flick is her admission that she hates those stairs. She dreads them every night but by the time she reaches the top, she’s prepared to make it through. She has to. She also has to decide who to trust and what to believe, how to live independently. She has to learn what’s in her own best interest and learn to act accordingly. How can I be facing the same fate in 2009 NYC as the fictional Keiko (Mama) of 1960 Japan? Naruse must be a master. I’m convinced. I love the rare, great heroine, and I love it when a great title isn’t wasted but in fact augurs a great film.

Just saying.

I kinda believe that even if they didn’t know it, they still copied. These kinds of similarities are always related, consciously or not.

Conflicted about working. On the one hand, I feel I have much to offer. On another, I feel little impulse to work for a living. I have ambitions. I’d like to contribute something timeless to the world and leave it a better place for my existence. But do I have to work eight hours a day in an office for that to happen? Probably not. Most do-gooding is not done in this way.

What I’d like to do, given my ‘druthers:

I’d like to say “Greenlight!” to talented black people making media. **Not Tyler Perry. (<– two (2) sentences.)

**1st of all, Tyler Perry needs no one else’s green light.
2ndly, his shit sucks. Hard.
How did we get to this point where a man can build a media empire on sheer ambition? Okay, maybe it’s not just ambition. Maybe there’s more than that to the mega audiences he attracts. He also seems to have found the key to congealing a black audience. But why must that key be mediocrity cum God awfulness? It’s fucking depressing. Like, Catcher in the Rye depressing.

No, seriously, his shit is bad. Like some of the worst quality shit you’ll ever see 10 times a day on TBS (Tyler’s Broadcasting System). What is it about that guy? He’s uniting black people on some BULLSHIT. I mean, don’t we always complain that black people don’t get together on anything? That we don’t pool our resources, we don’t support each other’s businesses, etc., etc., underachievement, etc? Now this dude Perry has really got our black asses to unite for some dollars–$640 million dollars, allegedly. He has his own STUDIO. Like, a real one. A gigantic one. In a black town. A studio where movies can be made. Still partners with the matrix on distribution but cot-damn!

The problem, for me, is not coonery buffoonery as Spike Lee contends, but Perry’s basic and complete inability to write in English.

Also herein establishes the conflict which arises by use of the royal “we,” as in “we, the blacks,” because my ass does not and will not watch Tyler Perry’s House of Shit Shows.

Clearly there is more than one black audience, no? Perry has not succeeded with me, and ain’t I a black audience? Yet I feel compelled to keep trying to like House of Shit. That mission is to be continued…

I didn’t do any internships in college or grad school “because my parents were slaves,” as Nina Simone reminds us, which I shall not be, never more.
Sorry again, sirs. I simply could not.
It’s hard enough working for money, which I have always done since I was seventeen. Seriously, who can live without a paycheck? I never could. And yet I continue to find myself under-employed at age 30. Rather, temporarily employed. Every job of late has been temporary because I still have yet to find my niche on the wheel/in the matrix.

If my excessively expensive education has taught me a damn thing it’s that my smarts are worth a damn, even IN THIS ECONOMY. I’m not anti-work, just anti-working for others. Working “with” is cool. I think I could dedicate myself to working up to that, but all this working “for” in the meantime blows. Hard.
